Electric Gates

Designed to protect you.

Types and How They Work

Electric gate installation has an electric-powered mechanism that allows the gate to open and close smoothly. The automated gate system also incorporates safety features such as sensors that determine if there is an obstruction present. To prevent the electric gate from being damaged by drivers who are driving fast, speed bumps are often placed before the gate entrance to slow down vehicles. In addition to that, the gates are used as part of a security protocol for at-risk properties. Keep your property safe and protected by availing of electric gate installation, as well as automatic gate opener repair services.

Is an electric gate high security?

Because it operates slowly, an electric gate doesn’t offer the best protection against the unauthorized entrance and does not give a completely secure environment even though it looks imposing and solid, which itself can be a deterrent. An electric gate alone needs to be bolstered by such things as closed circuits with video surveillance cameras, electric locks, strategic lighting, electronic keypads and keycards, possibly security guards, and other features to bring it to a full security system.

The Electric Gate Motor

Whether automatic or not, there are two motor types: hydraulic or electromechanical. This electric device is what actually enables the gate to open and close without having to push the gate manually.

Types of Electric Gates

Electric gates are strong, aesthetically pleasing, and easily available in an extensive range of designs and types. These include swing, double-swing, custom-made slide, cantilever gates, and wooden gates. Here are a few types of electric gates.

has one solid piece of fencing or metal that retracts into a slot to give the necessary space to enter the driveway, an electric motor, a backup battery, and an infrared obstacle sensor on the wall to prevent the gate from closing when a vehicle, person, or other obstacle is in the way.

It works great if you have limited space at the entrance or driveway. These work with the help of an electric motor, a backup battery, and an infrared sensor attached to the wall so the gate won’t start to close when the vehicle or person is in the way.

Ram or link arm units

are often more suitable for commercial and multi-user systems. The manual release is above ground, which makes it better to operate.

Bi-parting Gates

are more theatrical with a large variety of designs that will suit almost any design scheme. You can choose between swing gates that pivot inward to allow vehicles to enter or scroll gates that move side-to-side. They are the most expensive of the gates, require more regular maintenance, and need at least two motors to be the power for the opening process.

What Does a Gate Cost?

That will depend entirely on the functions, features, and style. Manual gates may cost as little as $500 without installation, but automatic gates could cost over $10,000. Setting up an automatic gate system requires the engineering and construction skills of a professional gate installer, who also may be required to complete the professional certifications necessary to do electrical work in most states. There is also the cost of ongoing regular maintenance.

Card-based Entry

Uses a card that is inserted or a card with an RFID chip that is specifically programmed for the gate. It is popular with businesses with a large number of employees. If an employee is fired or quits, the card just has to simply be disabled and there is no need for a new password every time.

Wireless Keypad Entry

Is safe and convenient and hassle-free. One of the major benefits of a card-based interface is that there is no risk of the card being stolen and used by an unauthorized person. It is easier to install and program than the card-based entry, has many password options, can be placed anywhere around the entrance, and communicates with the gate remotely.

Fingerprint access

Is a streamlined verification without a keypad and monitor and is a fast method for the permanent people who use the system constantly.

Safety Regulations

The requirements in the United States are that all installations of electric gates must meet the standard of Underwriters Laboratories 325 (UL 325). The system must be checked by a calibrated force tester and the results maintained in a technical file for seven years. The gate’s installer is the one responsible for the conformity to regulations and not the manufacturer. A full risk assessment must take place with the maximum amount of force at certain test points, all crush and cutting points, confirmation of all necessary electrical equipment, and with the offering of appropriate protection devices and a recommended maintenance program to ensure that the gate will operate properly.
